Nejprve by ale bylo dobré definovat vychvalované investiční diamanty. Dle reklamních akcí to vypadá, že investice 100 až 500 tisíc do jedno a více karátových kamenů je velice výhodná. Je to ale pravda?
Odmyslíme-li si nepravdy některých zprostředkovatelů tvrdících že cena diamantů stoupá, měla by být pro investiční kámen prodaný s atestem kvality záruka, že si jej, v případě že jeho majitel bude potřebovat hotovost v nejbližších dvou až pěti letech , odkoupí za cenu která za něj byla vyplacena, buď sami prodejci, nebo jasně definovaný garanční bankovní dům. Skutečnost je ale taková, že podobná záruka neexistuje. Budete-li se snažit svůj kámen prodat, dostanete za něj podstatně méně než jste zaplatili. Ztráta může být až 50 %. To ostatně platí i pro bankovní zlaté slitky. Dráždí mne agresivní reklama prodejců investičních kamenů. Upozorňuji proto již delší čas na tento problém.
V českých novinách (MfD 3. 12. 2008) se objevil článek s názvem Velké diamantové firmy kvůli krizi omezují těžbu. Z článku cituji: Strach před pádem cen pravých diamantů nutí jejich těžaře omezovat produkci. Čím bude nabídka drahých kamenů na trhu nižší, tím větší mají šanci udržet si nynější hodnotu. Na listopadovém fóru v Antverpách, které jsou centrem světového diamantového obchodu, to oznámily největší firmy v oboru – jihoafrický De Beers a ruská Alrosa. Musely se přitom přemáhat, protože na ně zároveň tlačí po hotovosti lačné banky, které chtějí co nejrychlejší splacení jejich dluhů. Například Alrosa oznámila, že snižuje těžbu o třicet procent, nicméně do konce února by měla vrátit syndikátu bank v čele s Morgan Stanley 350 milionů dolarů. Snížením dodávek však přijde o část svých příjmů.

Jakou je tedy investiční diamant zárukou si může každý domyslet bez ohledu na kampaň prodejců. Spoléhat se na zlato a diamanty není příliš moudré. Je jiná doba, spotřební společnost má jiná hodnotová měřítka a obě tyto komodity patří mezi věci zbytné.
