Mezi evropskými vědci má na tomto poli význačné místo Georgius Agricola (1494 -1555), vlastním jménem Jiří Bauer. Zdůrazňuje potřebu pěstovat přírodovědné znalosti o kovech a jejich sloučeninách a o použití jejich. Sám říká: "Tyto věci daly především podnět k tomu, že jsem se usadil v rudnaté krajině." Jako prvý zavádí mezi kameny určitý systém. Již dříve, v jiném ze svých spisů (Bermannus, sive de re metallica dialogus - Forben, Basilej 1530) píše: "Minerály, které se neliší vzhledem a barvou, nejsou hned také z téže látky jako např. skleněné napodobeniny drahokamů".
Jeho knika De Natura Fossilium je bez nadsázky první souborná kniha o nerostech a doslova v ní píše, že je třeba: "zkoumati rozdíly, vlastnosti a upotřebení hmot vykopávaných, tak řečených fossilií". Nerosty dělí na čtyři třídy: země (terra), ztuhlý roztok (succus concritus), kámen (lapis) a kov (metallum). Na konci této jeho knihy se dočteme i o řezání a broušení drahokamů a také o jejich napodobování. V knize VI. na str. 272 jeho díla pak máme docela přesný záznam o výskytu českých granátů, které označuje jako carbunculi carchedonii in Boemorum agris (na českém území): "V Čechách 5 mil od Litoměřic na polích při cestě do Třebenic a také v okolí Želkovic, kolem 3 mílí od této lokality a na polích u Lotendorfu, kolem 10 mílí od města Mostu na cestě do Hory Sv. Kateřiny. Také se nalézejí v Čechách na jaře mezi opevněným městem, které naši krajané regia specula jmenují, avšak v jejich řeči jde o královskou hlídku, a městem Plana (poznámka: v dnešním pojetí se jedná o Kynžvart u Mariánských Lázní). Najdou se ve Slezsku, Krkonoších, v Trákii, na Peloponnésu u Korintu, v Arkádii .. ..", a výčet lokalit pokračuje. Označení český granát, pro pyropy z Českého středohoří ještě v době Agricolově neexistovalo. On sám píše, že mladí jej nazývají granatus, takže o granátu se již mluvilo, starší pisatelé jej označovali jako carchedonius. Toho označení se tehdy přidržoval i Agricola.
Své postavení mezi drahými kameny dosáhl pyrop až za vlády císaře Rudolfa II. a komerční název český granát si podržel až po naše dny. Praha se stává nejen jedním z nejvýnamějších evropských míst severně od Alp, císařským sídlem, ale i centrem zpracování drahých kamenů. Panovník Rudolf II., sám astrolog, alchymista a vášnivý sběratel uměleckých předmětů, nejen že sbíral stará díla glyptického umění, nýbrž vyžadoval i díla nová. Zpracovávali ovšem i jinou českou surovinu, zvláště křišťály, acháty, jaspisy a jejich odrůdy. Z doby Rudolfa II. je v Praze známoprvních 42 kamenářů. Jsou to učitelé všech následných generací brusičů ve stoletích 18. až 21. Mineralogické základy studia šperkových kamenů nicméně pocházejí od Agrikoly a jeho následovníků ze kterých si zaslouží připomenutí Anselmus de Boot, osobní lékař císaře Rudolfa II, znalec drahokamů a správce rudolfinských sbírek.
